Hi all, My name is Dustin. I became a member a little while back, but didn't formally introduce myself until now. My father bought his Ascot back in 1987 when a local Honda shop ran a sale for "new in crate" Ascots. They had been sitting in their inventory for three years, and were not selling so my dad got a great deal on his. The odometer had not even turned over to 1/10th of a mile yet. As a kid, I did not ride it much because he also had a 750 Sabre that was better suited to my 6' 2" frame (it was also a lot, lot faster). About three years ago my dad gave me the bike because the only time it was ridden was when I went to visit him.
I have not had much opportunity to ride the bike lately because my job requires that I carry a bunch of stuff back and forth with me to work. Since I have taken posession of the bike, I have only been able to ride it 10 to 12 times. The last few times I have ridden it, the bike has taken a very long time to warm up, run well and idle smoothly. Today I went for a ride and the bike backfired continuously on me whenever I was going at a leisurely pace. It would then surge pretty vigorously whenever I opened up the throttle a little less than half a twist. If I blip the throttle when parked, the engine will continue to rev up for a few seconds before returning to idle.
I have read somewhere about the coils on the Ascot being notoriously weak and causing a lot of misfiring problems. Does anyone think that this is the case, or is the carb just gummed up. I did drain the tank an refill with new gas before my ride and I do use a fuel stabilizer whenever I put gas in the tank, but I doubt my father did the same.
Well I guess that is quite a lot for just a greeting, but it is what drove me to post in the first place.
Dustin
P.S. My Ascot is entirely original and has 3770 miles on it. I just changed the original spark plugs today!
